Moles
are woodland animals in nature, but can quickly colonize and spread
through adjacent residential properties if not handled properly. Since
they need a well-established tunnel network to survive, the longer
they're allowed to tunnel, the more habituated they become and difficult
to control. |
Moles live most of their lives in
underground tunnels, or runways, displayed as low ridges on the surface of
yards, flowerbeds, gardens and other landscapes. Moles create these tunnels
while in search of food, sometimes creating a vast interconnected "highway"
system. Moles dig runways
also to provide protection and living space for travel,
resting, and nesting.
Mole tunnels are frequently found under fence lines and dirt roads, along sidewalks,
under lawn turf, and along flowerbeds -- anywhere subterranean insect life is
prolific.The main runways are usually about 6 inches
under ground level, but may be as shallow as 2 inches or as deep as 20 inches.
Shallow runways are usually used only once.
Moles come to the
surface occasionally, mainly at night, to search for food, water, and nesting
material. Migrations may occur overland also.
